Transport Energy Information
- A truck travels 2-3 km on one litre of diesel oil, thereby emitting 2.7 kg of CO2.
- Therefore, the CO2 emission can be estimated at approx. 1 kg per km travelled.
- A truck load of straw with a calorific value of 14.5 GJ/tonne weighs 11 - 12 tonnes and represents an amount of energy of approx. 170 GJ.
- Since the emission from coal is approx. 100 kg/GJ, then the straw corresponds to a CO2 emission of approx. 17 tonnes subject to coal being burbt instead of straw.
- That means that the truck should travel 17,000 km with a load of straw in order to emit the same amount of CO2 that is saved by using the truck load of straw as a fuel instead of coal.
- It can also be expressed by saying that the CO2 saving is reduced by approx. 0.6% per 100 km transport distance travelled.

Strawbix Energy Information
- The Strawbix is now available in a starter pack of 5Kg. Also comes in 10Kg and 20Kg bags.
- The Strawbix have a caloric value of 17 Mega Joules (MJ) per Kilogram at 12% m.c.
- 1 tonne of straw has a caloric value of 17,000 MJ per tonne of 17 Giga Joules (GJ) per tonne.
- 1 hectare produce on average 4 tonne of straw therefore the total energy produced per hectare is 68 GJ.
- To convert the GJ's to kilo Watt hours (kWh), multiply by a factor of 278.
- Hence there are 16,680 kWh in hectare of straw.
- 1 hectare produces on average 4 tonne of straw = 3.54 kWh per kg = 0.52 litres of home heating oil.
- 1 tonne of straw briguettes is equal to 520 litres of home heating oil.
- A 5 kg pack of Strawbix will give a greenhouse gas saving of 6.65 kf of CO2 equivalent if we compare the straw to oil.
- 1 tonne of straw will give a saving of 1,330 kg of CO2.
- If we assume a yield of 4 tonnes per hectare the net saving on CO2 emmissions compared to oil is one hectare of straw saving 5,320 kg of CO2 or 5.3 tonnes of CO2 per hectare.
